Errol Milner Clifford 2006-2009

Errol Milner Clifford was born with a significant heart defect and a cognitive disability that prevented him from walking or talking. As we grieved the child we had anticipated, Errol’s full-bodied smile and irrepressible laugh turned our sorrow into joy, and taught us that many of the best things in life are unexpected. Inspired by Errol’s delightful spirit, friends, family, and neighbors rallied to support our family’s significant emotional, physical, and financial needs, through countless acts of selfless generosity. When Errol’s courageous heart finally failed him on December 23, 2009 we were left numb with grief. In these dark hours we listen hopefully for the echoes of Errol’s brilliant laugh. This blog is the story (starting from present and working back to Errol's birth) of the life and times of the amazing Errol Clifford.

When I think of Errol, I think of a laughing little boy playing "catch me if you can" with Lucy on a slow day at the farmer's market, followed by a little hide & seek game. Just two 3 1/2 year olds having good fun. One short moment of play-pure, easy joy. The secret of life. I will forever wish for more of those moments with Errol and Lucy.

Dear Milner family: I won't be able to attend the memorial but will certainly be there in spirit. My thoughts are with you all, and of course Errol, whose legacy of bravery and hope will certainly outlast us all. Much love.

Errol

i can't imagine.

i can't imagine,
the loss
the grief
the pain
the sorrow.

but then i remember with a flash
of blonde
of blue
the smile,
the infectious laugh,
the "oh--ohh" he joyously
exclaimed as he felt the horse's
movement beneath him.

he lived the moment fully.

so yes, i can imagine.

i imagine hope and life.
i imagine
love.

thanks to you Errol.

My kids and I spent many an afternoon on the playgrounds of the Children's Center with Errol, Owen and Cary. But what I remember most is the first time Errol visited my house, the first time he'd seen me away from the Children's Center. He looked surprised to see me in this different setting. As I talked to him, his surprise soon melted in to a big smile. At that moment I felt very special.
