Errol Milner Clifford 2006-2009

Errol Milner Clifford was born with a significant heart defect and a cognitive disability that prevented him from walking or talking. As we grieved the child we had anticipated, Errol’s full-bodied smile and irrepressible laugh turned our sorrow into joy, and taught us that many of the best things in life are unexpected. Inspired by Errol’s delightful spirit, friends, family, and neighbors rallied to support our family’s significant emotional, physical, and financial needs, through countless acts of selfless generosity. When Errol’s courageous heart finally failed him on December 23, 2009 we were left numb with grief. In these dark hours we listen hopefully for the echoes of Errol’s brilliant laugh. This blog is the story (starting from present and working back to Errol's birth) of the life and times of the amazing Errol Clifford.

Emergency Surgery

Dr. Lodge, the cardio-thoracic surgeon, just started emergency surgery on Errol to install a temporary pacemaker to give his heart more support. They can't move Errol to the OR so they are going to do the procedure in the PCICU. Cary is with Errol. I am a mile away with sleeping Owen (who has no idea what's happening) who I can't take to the hospital (no kids allowed). Heroic Benjamin (my brother) is driving from Winston to Durham right now so I can dash to the hospital to be with beloved Errol. The procedure should last until about midnight.

This is actually great news.
I think it is good because it means that the doctors are giving him all the possibilities of surviving. Doing surgery in the PICU is also not a problem. I have sat in on a PICU surgery of a heart. It makes sense. Go Errol. Go Errol. We are behind you babe, we are backing you up.

Millions of prayers are lifting like ballons, up and up, and up.

Peace.........

Dear friends, Cary & Jonathan, I am thinking of you all and sweet Errol at this moment, 11:35pm. I understand the surreal zone you are in. I have been there waiting outside the surgery theater for news of a loved one with a life-threatening infection. It's the ultimate magnification of life's fragility.

Just holding you all in my heart so tightly--Owen too--and Benjamin, your parents, the whole family. Friends continue to beam you with love and hope from everywhere.
