Errol Milner Clifford 2006-2009

Errol Milner Clifford was born with a significant heart defect and a cognitive disability that prevented him from walking or talking. As we grieved the child we had anticipated, Errol’s full-bodied smile and irrepressible laugh turned our sorrow into joy, and taught us that many of the best things in life are unexpected. Inspired by Errol’s delightful spirit, friends, family, and neighbors rallied to support our family’s significant emotional, physical, and financial needs, through countless acts of selfless generosity. When Errol’s courageous heart finally failed him on December 23, 2009 we were left numb with grief. In these dark hours we listen hopefully for the echoes of Errol’s brilliant laugh. This blog is the story (starting from present and working back to Errol's birth) of the life and times of the amazing Errol Clifford.

Santa Claus gloves up!!!!!!!

The holidays are an especially sad time to be in the hospital, but the nurses and doctors work hard to bring some cheer to the kids: Larry the bipolar bear (sometimes it doesn't work). Today, Santa and his elves visited the 5300 hallway of Duke Hospital with a cart full of teddy bears. I didn't tell them that Errol is Jewish. He loves his toy bear but the bear seemed a little depressed.

I'll order some Lexapro for the bear!

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It still looks like Errol will have his open-heart surgery on Monday. We'll keep you updated.

We are so sorry about Errol's illness and upcoming surgery! I can't believe he (and you) are having to go through so much. Just this time last year Victor was in the PICU also. Victor sends a high-five to his buddy Errol : )

Love,
Theresa and Paul

Seems enough is enough, and yet another avenue of hope opens and must be pursued in an effort to improve Errol's quality of life. Cruel illness which further damaged his heart -- so not fair! Hold on for dear life the laurel of love stretching from WS to Durham. Please know your many friends and family continue to hold each of you up with love and best thoughts as you go from day to day, trying to make sense out of what has been dealt Errol, and thus your entire family.

Lotsa hugs and strength to each of you.

Anne (Charlie Francis, too)
